Toy Town...

A few months ago I saw this amazing video called The Sandpit...
(Click fullscreen to see it a bit better... sorry it's quite low resolution)

The film shows lots of different parts of New York, from the Hudson River to Dumbo, from the Flat Iron District to Brooklyn Heights, from the Highline to Union Square. It shows a view of everyday life going on down below.

It's been created using thousands upon thousands of photographs, taken quickly like stop frame animation and placed together. Then a 'tilt shift' effect has been added to the photographs to give them the feel of a little toy town - it works amazingly well, especially when there are shots of the river and the boats bobbing around on the water.

I've seen some fantastic examples of tilt shift photography and I've finally found out how to do it, so I've been rummaging through some of my photos from the past year and playing around with the tilt shift effects.

So here are some of my Toy Town New York shots...

The Meatpacking District

Central Park Fountain

Coney Island Beach

Coney Island Funfair

The New York Yankees

Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Bridge Park Again

One More Brooklyn Bridge Park

(If you click on the images they look better being bigger)

It's a first attempt, but it's great fun making things look like they're little models... I'm going to rummage through some more photos and take some new ones and practice at getting it to look right... it could be a fun little project doing something similar to the Sandpit film...

  1. How very clever - it all look like Lilliput from Gulliver's travels. What a great project to work on - you could make up a story!
We loved to film clip too.
