Across The Tracks...

Urban Gnome...

I wouldn't have even spotted this little chap unless I had to stop at the zebra-crossing. He was hiding in an old fire-station phone box thingy...

Lunchtime Stroll...

The other day I went for a lunchtime walk and came across a very futuristic shop entrance for a very fancy Commes Des Garçon shop...

The silver, egg-shaped walk-way led through an old tatty red brick wall that was covered in loads of wheat pastings and other street art...

It was in a funny area of town - around 21st St and 10th Avenue where there are lots of (very quiet looking) galleries and storage company warehouses - but it's a great spot for street art, there always seems to some new little thing up around there.

Head Chop...

This evening Abi and I popped into a funny little place on Berry Street called Head Chop.

From the outside, it just looks like you're going down to a basement apartment, but inside it's a small shop/art studio/hair salon full of amazing stuff...

Head Chop is the hair salon part of the shop, but there are lots of things for sale that have been created by artist Clinton Van Germer - there are his Head Hoods (hoodies with pictures on the side of the hoods), his Brooklyn Nets tshirts, his 'I can't afford to love New York' t-shirts, his handmade wallets...

I'd actually seen Mr Van Germer's stuff up on the walls around Brooklyn but didn't know that it was his work, I'd also seen his brilliant little three-wheeler-moto-buggy thing parked around Brooklyn too, so it was great to put a name to the work (and face as he was there) and to find where to buy stuff with his designs on. Abi got a great Brooklyn Nets jumper (with free bag which I'm going to steal) - it's so soft!

Talking of soft, I think the best thing about the whole shop (other than all the amazing tshirts and jumpers and wallets and screen printing on the walls, retro hair dressing stuff and other bits and pieces just lying around...) was the lovely, calm and amazingly cute and cuddly dog that greets you as you walk in! I was very tempted to put him in Abi's bag and take him home with us.

It was a funny little place, but a great place too - it was like a little hidden Aladin's cave of creativity and a very 'Brooklyn' kind of place too... a nice bit of inspiration for a Tuesday evening.

Eye On You...

When I was out mooching around on Sunday I found another JR piece in Greenpoint...

3 Years!

March 23rd was Abi's 3 year anniversary of living in New York!!!

We celebrated in typical Turner style, with a Lombardi's pizza and some Eileen's cheesecake for pudding!

Great Balls of Fire!

Last night, after we walked over the bridge we went and had a cuppa Joe in Dumbo.

We were sitting at the window of Starbucks by the Manhattan Bridge, just enjoying a little bit of pudding and minding our own business when all of a sudden, out of the corner of our eye we saw something in the sky...

We looked up and saw a bright streak of light flying across the sky, then it seemed to just disappear!

It looked like a very low flying shooting star or a comet or something - it was really weird.

Well, after a bit of googling it turns out that Nasa have confirmed that it was in fact a meteor!

Over The Bridge...

It was a lovely evening yesterday (albeit a wee bit chilly), so we decided to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge...

It'd been AGES since either of had walked over the bridge and although they're still doing work to it, it looked as magnificent as ever!

The sun was going down as we walked across, so the final bits of evening sun were catching on some of the buildings - the Empire State Building looked particularly golden, standing up tall amongst everything else...

It was a really lovely start to the weekend - the sun's still shining this morning so hopefully Spring is finally here?!

Piece By Piece...

Yesterday lunch time I walked up to the Art Directors Club to see the 'Piece By Piece' exhibition.

The exhibition is the first solo show by Sean Kenney, who has had a normal desk job for the last 10 years but has been VERY busy with some lego in his spare time...

He'd built some amazing things, like a HUGE rubber duck, tricycle, xylophone and a lovely (life-sized) bright green bike...

He'd also built a scale model of the Brooklyn Bridge, complete with dispersing traffic...

Tom, I think you'd have loved it - especially the model of Times Square...

 There were even working lamps!

There were a couple of big tables covered with hundreds and thousands of green lego bricks, where people could make their own pieces and put them on display...

I'm surprised the exhibition wasn't on at the Lego shop or something, but I'm very glad that it was just a few blocks from work. The Art Directors Club have had a few good little exhibitions and they've all been free!
Not bad for a Monday.
