We Buy White Albums is a funny sort of gallery exhibition by Rutherford Chang at a place on Grand Street called Recess. Rutherford Chang has been collecting first press (the first 3 million) copies of The Beatles White Albums.
Actually he's been collecting a LOT of copies of The Beatles White Albums...
He's managed to collect hundreds and hundreds of the original numbered vinyls from various people from around the world. With them all set out in number order (all the original released vinyls were stamped with an individual number), like an odd minimal record shop.
All of them were in different states, some nice and crisp and clean, others had been scribbled over or had notes written on them...

Of course, the only music playing in the gallery was The White album...
It was a bit bizzare, but brilliant at the same time - the really interesting thing was seeing what people had done to the albums. A lot of people had drawn over 'The Beatles' on the front cover so they could read it. There were a fair few that had been drawn on and there were some that had just been left alone.
It's funny to see what people to with a seemingly blank canvas - that's not really a canvas at all, it's an object. It reminded me a bit of my (very non-conclusive) dissertation.

As part of the exhibition, Rutherford is digitally recording every record from the gallery (in their varying conditions), he's also documenting every single cover (all 700 of them!)... I imagine there'll be a nice white(ish) book to follow.
