Just behind the Fairway car park is Reed Street - a short little road with a couple of industrial units on it. Tucked in between a construction site and a warehouse is number 26....
26 Reed St has been turned into an amazing nautical memorabilia garage. It's a tiny little building covered in black tar paper with hundreds of little nic-nacs hanging up...
I thought I'd better ask the owner if they minded if I took some photos - he said as long as they were photos of the outside, it would be fine. I had a peek inside the garage though and it was even more full with trinkets...
There was almost too much in there to distinguish what anything was - but parked in the middle of the garage was a beautiful bright yellow classic convertible.
I was so intrigued by this place, I looked it up when I got back to work and found a little article about it. Apparently the owner is a Red Hook local, who's been there all his life, his brother owns the bar round the corner, and their family have been in the area for generations. Over time he's collected more and more nautical items and the collection's grown and grown. Since 9/11 he's been adding more patriotic items, like the eagle and the stars and stripes, and the two mirrored twin towers sitting above the garage door.
It's was bizarre and brilliant and such a little hidden treasure down in Red Hook.
It must be a right pain to dust everything though!
