Hat Diggedy Dawg...

On a very hot and sunny morning on July 4th, Tom and I headed down to Coney Island for the annual Nathan's Hot Dog eating competition...

As we arrived the female contestants were being introduced - this year they had two separate competitions, the women's championships followed by the men's. While that was going on we went to get ourselves a couple of hot dogs to get into the spirit of things.

We had a wee bit of time to kill before the big main event, so Tom and I went for a little mooch around (a very slow mooch in the sweltering heat!).
We walked along the boardwalk and stopped off for a pint of Brooklyn Larger Summer Ale and did some people watching. Coney Island must be on off the best places for people watching - the characters are fantastic down there.

We made our way back over to Surf Avenue, where the crowds were gathering...

Then the wait was over, it was competition time...

68! Sixty. Eight. Hot Dogs! In 10 minutes...

Unbelievable!

We had a slightly more modest 6 hot dogs through out the day...

At least we kept all of ours down and got to enjoy each mouthful!

We had a great time in Coney Island after the contest too. We went to the 'Smallest Brewery in the World'! The Coney Island brewery, which was just a small room with a couple of fridges and a couple of pumps of their ale, we had a bottle of their IPA and Pilsner.

Then we plucked up the courage to go and see the Coney Island Side Show Circus... or Freak Show! I've always wondered what it would be like inside, the painted adverts outside are so fantastic and make it sound like a proper Victorian side-show... and it was.

We went in and sat in the small theatre bit, then a lady with tattoos all over her face, arms and legs came out to introduce each act. There was a fire breather, a lady that danced with a python, an escape artist, a sword swallowing contortionist who got electrocuted and a midget who swallowed a sausage balloon that was taller than her! It was brilliantly bizarre!

We had another great July 4th down in Coney Island, but it was time to head back up to Bed Stuy for some BBQing and fireworks...
