The Intrepid...

We carried on up the Hudson River cycle path until we got to the Intrepid - we'd both wanted to go and see the Space Shuttle on the Intrepid for a while, so we thought now was as good a time as any.... so we hopped aboard!

The Intrepid is a truly awesome ship, it's gigantic, it looks big from the road but once you're on it you realised just how HUGE it is! It houses so many different types of planes and helicopters, including Concord and the Enterprise Shuttle!

We started off inside the ship and then worked our way out onto the main deck...

This Blackbird jet can fly at 3 times the speed of sound!!!

I loved seeing all the different decorations on the planes, skull and crossbones, aces, tigers, call-signs, country flags, all sorts of different emblems and names, all hand-painted on to the side of the planes...

Looks like Abi's distant relative was a pilot!

Then it was time to go and look at a Space Ship!

The Enterprise is HUGE (too huge to fit in one photo!), it's much much bigger than I imagined it would be, especially as I'd seen lots of photos of it strapped to the back of a Jumbo Jet flying over New York (that Jumbo Jet must have been enormous!).

It was amazing to be so close to something that had been up in space (or the edge of space as the Enterprise never actually went into space).

Interesting Enterprise Fact: The ship was originally going to be called 'The Constitution' but 400,000 Star Trek fans signed a petition to have the ship renamed after the Starship Enterprise!!!

Our tickets also included a tour around a nuclear submarine, so that was next...

We boarded the submarine, casually walking passed the HUGE cruise missile on top...

... and down into the claustrophobic hull below the water...

We got to snoop around all the different areas, where the torpedo's would have been fired from, the main control room, the sleeping quarters (which were incredibly cramped), the bathrooms (which were even more cramped), the mess room and the engine room, it was incredible.

After coming back above the water, we went to go and have a look at Concord...

You had to have special tickets to go inside Concord, but it was great just being able to walk underneath it and see it up close - it's much smaller than I'd imagined.

Then it was time to have a look round the gift shop...

(The jacket is meant to be for children!)

The Intrepid was BRILLIANT, I'm so glad we finally went to see it and have a look at the Enterprise and Concord. It was a blummin' great way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon.
