On Friday afternoon illustrator/artist/salad enthusiast Jon Burgerman came to the studio to give a little talk.
Ages ago Elmwood had commisioned Jon Burgerman to do some illustrations for a job, in the end the job never came to anything but Ben kept in contact him. He's recently moved to Brooklyn, so men invited him to the studio to talk to us all about his work and his career so far...
Jon Burgerman graduated about 10 years ago, and has gone from making stickers to designing trainers for Nike, working for Pepsi, producing his own iPhone Apps and now bringing out records - so he's had an eventful career so far!
It was great to hear him talk about what he does and how certain jobs came about, and to have such a small intimate talk - just the eight of us - considering these talks are usually for a couple of hundred people at a time.
One of the most interesting bits of the talk for me was hearing about how working with KidRobot came about, and how the toys were designed and manufactured...
A couple of years ago Steve and I took an inspiration day and travelled down to London for the opening of the KidRobot store in Selfridges, it was to coincided with the British Dunny series. At the opening all the artists who had created the new toys were there, so we were able to meet Jon Burgerman and get him to sign a toy. So it was great to be able to meet him again, properly and talk to him about his work.
The plan is to see if Ian Wright fancies coming in and giving a similar talk - so that might be the next in the series of mini chats. We're very lucky to be in a small office and be able to have these people come in and sit on the sofa with us and talk about their work - you don't get that in any other studio!
